Driving in Vanuatu is on the right side of the road, as in the USA & Europe. There are a number of car rental agencies including Avis, Budget, Discount Car Rentals and World Cars all offering competitive car hire rates – be sure to ask whether VAT is included as it is not included in all rates. If venturing out of Port Vila you will need a 4WD car. Take your time and spend the day driving around the island (around 6 hours not including stops).
Tip: Don't include Cascades Waterfalls or Hideaway Island as part of the round island trip as they require 2 to 3 hours each and should be allocated their own day or days.
Taxis are plentiful and are all metered although some may agree to a fixed rate. It is quite common for a driver to offer passengers a comparable rate to the bus. Mini buses offer a frequent though not timetabled service. Look for the letter 'B' next to the front licence plate and simply flag one down and tell the driver where you want to go.
